SINGING AND DANCING ON THE QUAYS
Saturday 20th & Sunday 21st June 2009
Bordeaux will play host to a new festival open to the public and centred on the Garonne river, music, and dance on 20-21 June 2009. This will coincide with the arrival of the Belem, France's last surviving three-masted tall ship, which will drop anchor in the Port of the Moon, in the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage Site.
This day of dancing will feature salsa, rock, and hip hop lessons, as well as performances by professional dancers and rehearsals by the Bordeaux Opera Ballet Company. These events, taking place on four stages on both the right and left banks of the Garonne (Miroir d’Eau, Bourse Maritime, Porte Cailhau, and La Bastide) from 2 pm onwards, will give visitors the chance to enjoy fabulous shows and try their own hand at dancing.
At 10 pm, the Bordeaux Opera Ballet Company, directed by Charles Jude, will perform two mythical modern ballets: Aunis, by Jacques Garnier and In the Middle SomewhatElevated by William Forsythe. A fireworks display will open the grand public ball, which will take place at the Miroir d'Eau, symbol of the city's renaissance, as well as other riverside locations.
Dancing will continue into the wee hours, and movie fans will be able to enjoy mythical films that have inspired generations of dancers on a large open-air screen (at the Bourse Maritime): West Side Story, Singing in the Rain, Chicago, Fame, and many more.
Thanks to strong participation from many of Bordeaux's cultural organisations at the Fête de la Musique, performances will take place at four different riverside locations (Miroir d’Eau, Bourse Maritime, Porte Cailhau, and La Bastide) from 2 pm onwards. These will feature all kinds of music: jazz, pop, rock, bandas (regional brass bands), and other more intimist genres.
The Rock School Barbey will be celebrating their 20th anniversary on this occasion.
At 10 pm, The Bordeaux Aquitaine National Orchestra, directed by Kwame Ryan, will bring the event to a close with a symphony concert and firework display.
The famous tall ship Belem will be moored opposite the Place des Quinconces starting at approximately 5 pm on Friday 19th June. Visitors will be allowed on board from 20-23 June (10 am to 6 pm). Entry: 4 € per person (free for children under 14).
On Saturday 20th June, some 400 contestants will take part in the 3rd Bordeaux à la Nage (Bordeaux river swim), a 1.7 km race across the Garonne, from one side of the city to the other. (Register at www.traverseedebordeaux.com - cost: 15€).
A great time is guaranteed on the 21st of June from noon to 11 pm, when a host of seagoing adventure films such as Jean Renoir's Le Fleuve, Otto Preminger's La Rivière, and Les Caprices d'un Fleuve, will be shown on the Giant Screen of theSea and River, along with documentaries about Bordeaux, Gateway to the Atlantic.
Thousands of visitors and exhibitors from around the globe taking part in the wine trade fair VINEXPO will join in the celebration starting on 21st June.
Bordeaux Fête le Fleuve – the Bordeaux River Festival – is a bi-annual event created by the Bordeaux Town Hall and organised by Bordeaux Grands Evénements, in cooperation with the Bordeaux Tourist Office, the Bordeaux Urban Community, the Gironde and Aquitaine councils, the Bordeaux Port Authority, the Bordeaux Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and other private organisations.
